Visual Notes #14
A day at 'The Big Meeting' at the Durham Miners' Gala
Hello, I hope you all have had a good summer. It feels like it has been a long one.
Back in July I was commissioned by French magazine, Society along with journalist Thomas Andrei to photograph the 139th Durham Miners’ Gala. The gala also known as ‘The Big Meeting’ is celebration of working-class life and socialist values, held annually in July. The day features a parade through the city centre of trade union groups with banners and brass bands culminating in speeches and celebrations at old racecourse. It was a day of energy, colour, politics and plenty of beer.
