Visual Notes #21
The Chronicles of Everything In Between
I recently rediscovered my Tumblr blog from a time before Instagram when social media was for the most part text based. I would post up everyday photos of friends, family, things I did and places I visited. A mix of quiet observations, landscapes and textures alongside chaotic portraits on nights out and excited crowds at gigs. It was entitled ‘The chronicles of everything in between’. I saw these pictures as separate from work photography but the page sat alongside my commissions on an old version of my website. I think it even helped me get a few jobs. When Instagram came along I treated it in a similar way to my blog but as the photography and creative industries embraced Instagram I felt a need to maintain a more curated professional feed.
I have realised that maybe these two things need to sit alongside each other again. My end goal as a photographer was always to be paid to photograph things the way I see them. What better way of showing this that photographing the things I want to be photographing as well.
Whilst my life has changed from 15 years ago, I now don’t go on spontaneous road trips or end up at house parties at the weekends, I still almost always have a camera with me. Now it is about capturing my family on walks in the Peaks or noticing a gnarly old tree in the woods. Different subjects but still looking at things with the same eyes.
Here are some pictures from the last few months
